Donnafugata: the castle, the gardens and the Hyblaean countryside

Surrounded by the Hyblaean countryside, among centuries-old olive trees, carob trees and dry stone walls, the Castle of Donnafugata appears as a clear vision in the light of the South. It is not a medieval manor, but a refined fortified aristocratic residence, commissioned in the nineteenth century by Baron Corrado Arezzo de Spuche to tell – in stone, gardens and halls – the lifestyle of a large Sicilian family.
A few kilometers from the baroque of Ragusa, Modica and Scicli, Donnafugata is the silent counterpoint of the cities of art: here time slows down, the details become more intimate, the experience becomes personal. It is the ideal place for those looking for authenticity, discreet elegance and a Sicily that is still deeply real.
The Castle of Donnafugata: a noble residence that tells the story of a dynasty
To access the castle, you walk along a wide avenue bordered by low stone houses, once farmers' quarters, now transformed into restaurants and small businesses: it is the first taste of a microcosm born around the noble residence.
The neo-Gothic façade is striking for its large portal, the two circular towers and the loggia with pointed arches that lighten the austere geometry of the walls. From the panoramic terrace, the gaze embraces the valley that descends towards the sea of Punta Braccetto, designed by rows of dry stone walls in white stone.
To transform the ancient medieval tower and the pre-existing farmhouse into a complex and scenic residence was Baron Corrado Arezzo de Spuches, a cultured politician of the new Kingdom of Italy, a great traveler and a refined spirit. It was he who gave the house the facility we admire today and diverted the Syracuse-Licata railway here, providing Donnafugata with its own station: a tangible sign of the family's prestige.

Inside, the dark stone staircase leads to the main floor, where about twenty rooms still tell the life of the Sicilian nobility between the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: smoking lounges, music rooms, refined bedrooms, the spectacular Hall of Mirrors and the large Hall of Coats of Arms, entirely covered with the emblems of the island's aristocratic families
Since 2020, the castle has also housed the MuDeCo – Museum of Costume, which through period clothes, fabrics and accessories restores the elegance of an era and the social role of its protagonists.

Three gardens, a labyrinth and a landscape of light
Around the castle extend about eight hectares of gardens, one of the most fascinating complexes in Europe. The park is divided into three souls: an English garden, a French parterre and a "Sicilian" garden, where citrus fruits and Mediterranean essences dialogue with the noble architecture.
Among the surprises:
-
The stone labyrinth inspired by that of Hampton Court, reinterpreted with Ragusa limestone.
-
The neoclassical coffee house and an elegant circular temple dotting the shaded avenues.
-
The water jokes and bizarre ideas desired by the baron – such as the monk who suddenly appears or the sprinkler hidden in a seat – which reveal an ironic and theatrical taste.
Walking at sunset through avenues, terraces and viewpoints means crossing a real en plein air theater, where the rural Hyblean landscape becomes a natural setting.

Curiosities, legends and anecdotes of Donnafugata
The mystery of the name
The origin of the name "Donnafugata" is shrouded in myth. A tradition links it to the legend of a "fuga donna", a woman on the run: it would be Bianca di Navarra, regent of the Kingdom of Sicily in the fifteenth century, here held prisoner by Count Bernardo Cabrera and escaped thanks to the help of servants.
According to the most recent studies, however, the toponym derives from the Arabic expression ain as-jafaiat, "source of health", later transformed into ronna fuata in the local language, indicating a spring located in an ancient property of the Arezzo family.
From novel to cinema
Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa chose the name Donnafugata for the residence of the Prince of Salina in The Leopard: it is not the Ragusa castle in the strict sense, but a literary synthesis of several Sicilian places, confirming the evocative aura linked to this name.
Over time, the royal castle has become the set of films and series, from The Viceroys to Tale of Tales, up to some episodes of Inspector Montalbano: a perfect stage to tell an aristocratic Sicily, suspended between reality and imagination.
The Baron's Jokes
The spirit of Baron Corrado emerges even in the most playful details: the rag monk who suddenly appears in a chapel in the garden, the fake tombs designed to intrigue and frighten visitors, the hidden sprinkler that is activated from a seat, unexpectedly, to the laughter of those who remain "victims".
These are small anecdotes that tell of a time when the house was not only a residence, but the scene of receptions, confidential meetings, political and worldly passions.
