Welcome to Modica, one of the most fascinating towns in the Val di Noto: hills that open onto spectacular views, a historic center carved in stone and a unique chocolate tradition in Europe. A hint of history

Modica boasts ancient origins and an important noble past. After the earthquake of 1693, the city was rebuilt in the late Baroque style that today defines its profile: scenic facades, monumental staircases, domes that stand out between the houses. The city is spread over two levels, Modica Alta and Modica Bassa, connected by suggestive staircases: walking is part of the experience.

Guest note: Modica is a vertical city. Comfortable shoes, hat and water, especially in spring/summer.

How to get to Modica

By car
Modica is connected to the main cities of eastern Sicily by state roads; signs for Ragusa/Syracuse and Modica are well signposted. From the area of Donnafugata and Ragusa it can be reached in less than an hour.
By plane
* Comiso Airport (CIY) – The nearest airport. Private transfers on request, taxi or car rental. * Catania Airport (CTA) – Direct connections by bus or car (driver recommended).
By train
South-eastern regional line (e.g. Syracuse–Noto–Modica–Ragusa): useful service for slow visits and transfers between cities in the Val di Noto.
By bus
Daily connections with Catania Airport, Syracuse, Noto and Ragusa. Convenient stop along the city center.

Premium tip: to avoid parking and climbs, consider a private driver or transfer to/from Modica, with drop-off near the main sites.

A day in Modica

  • Mattina - (circa 45 min)Signature breakfast in the center

    Granita or hot chocolate "alla modicana", almond biscuits and 'mpanatigghi. It's the best way to get into the spirit of the city.

  • Mattina – (1h 15 min)Corso Umberto I and St. Peter's Cathedral

    Walk in the city living room among boutiques, chocolate shops and historic buildings. Visit to St. Peter's Cathedral.

    Short transfer (on foot or by car with driver) to the most iconic panoramic terrace: unmissable photos of the city.

    Table in a trattoria selected for Modican cuisine: scacce, maccu di fava beans, Hyblean cheeses and country dishes. Alternatively, contemporary lunch in an elegant restaurant in the historic center.

    A choice:
    * Chocolate Museum (Palazzo della Cultura) with guided tasting,
    * Salvatore Quasimodo's birthplace for a journey into twentieth-century poetry.

  • Pomeriggio – L(1h)Chocolate workshop

    Entrance to a historic confectionery shop to discover the "cold" processing and taste bars with spices and citrus fruits.

  • Tardo pomeriggio – (1h)Aperitif at sunset

    Return to Modica Bassa: glass of Hyblean wine or Sicilian spritz in the square, between golden lights and city life.

  • Sera – (2h)Fine dining dinner

    Table in a gourmet restaurant in the center (Michelin star option) or signature bistro linked to local tradition.

  • Dopo cena – (45 min) Evening walk

    Corso Umberto illuminated, scenic churches and – why not – the last taste of chocolate.

Reservations recommended: tastings and gourmet restaurants almost always require reservations, especially on weekends and in high season.
